You may have a vacation, business, family reunion or wedding coming up, and you might have to leave your cat behind. Though you’ve heard about pet boarding facilities and pet sitters, you’re unsure about which one to choose. To be honest, it depends upon your budget, your pet’s personality and preferences. Is your pet a socialising being who enjoys playtime with her companions, or is she a more introverted character? Does he adjust well to short absences, or does he want to be around his favourite human all the time? There are advantages and disadvantages connected to both pet boarding facilities and pet sitters:

A luxury cat boarding involves the pet parent taking the cat to the facility for food and staying when you’re away, resembling a cat hostel. Though you’ll find other cats in the same place, your cat gets their space with food, water and toys. Before taking your cat to a cat boarding facility, you must have their vaccination, spaying and neutering schedules updated, which ensures complete safety and health on your part. Some facilities also require you to leave written feeding instructions, especially if you have an elderly or sick cat on a special diet or medication.

Unlike cat sitting, your cat would receive 24*7 care with playtime. Also, they’ll slowly adjust with multiple caregivers, along with enjoying their private relaxation space as needed. Caregivers check if the cat is receiving hot and fresh meals, water and medication. Boarding facilities come with a playroom where these cats walk around, play with the toys and engage with their new companions. Your cat should adjust to a different environment in long term cat boarding, especially if you’re away for several weeks. Also, would your pet be comfortable with many caregivers in a different environment?

Similar to babysitting, cat sitting involves a professional watching over your cat at home when the pet parent is away. They look after the cat’s feeding and watering schedules, along with administering medication and cleaning the litter boxes. If your cat needs constant human interaction, that would be difficult to achieve with a pet sitter. Also, there are safety issues involved when leaving the house in the hands of an unknown person.
